Dr. Lowell Ackerman is a board-certified veterinary dermatologist, an award-winning author, an international lecturer, and a consultant in veterinary practice management. He is a graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College (Canada) and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology. He also holds an MPA from Harvard University, an MBA from the University of Phoenix, and a Certificate in Veterinary Practice Administration from Purdue University/AAHA. Dr. Ackerman splits his time between clinical practice and consulting. He is a clinical dermatologist at the Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Ackerman is the author of 77 books (including Canine & Feline Dermatology, and Management Basics for Veterinarians). |

Diagnostic Tests for Common Skin Conditions

There are a variety of tests that can be performed in veterinary hospitals, and these can be very helpful in dermatologic diagnosis. It is important, however, that these tests be performed correctly to ensure their best utility. Here is a basic lecture on those commonly used tests, including skin scrapings, cytology, trichograms, "yeast preps", and biopsies for histopathologic assessment.
