1876 - silvani - animal behavior conference - 6 hrs

Dogs Will Be Dogs: What Is The Dog Telling You?
Understanding dogs’ social behavior is a crucial part of handling dogs. Labeling a dog “submissive,” “fearful” or “aggressive” is not accurate. Traits and behaviors are different. Knowing some behavioral categories when evaluating dogs will be helpful to the future relationship you have with not only the dog but its owners as well.

Helping the Shy Dog
Living with a fearful, shy, terrified puppy or dog can be a daily sorrow. Attempts have been made to socialize him and when someone attempts to pet or handle him he pulls away, panicking that someone will touch him. When on lead, he may feel trapped and exhibit threatening behaviors, or, even worse, urinate, defecate or bite. Can you turn this terrified pooch into a terrific pet, or is this just who he is? When do you push forward and when do you step back in order to help build his confidence? Videos will be shown of puppies and adults as well as ideas to "build an attitude!"

Dealing with Aggression
Aggression is one of the most serious problems to deal with. Causes can vary. Aggression is a ‘normal’ canine behavior, but one that we should not be forced to deal with. If owners take a pro-active approach, many dogs can learn to control their emotions. We will take a look at a few common situations which cause dogs to exhibit aggression. Pia will give live demonstrations on how to deal with these situations to avoid a bite!

Frightened Fidos
How do dogs feel fear and can they "get over it?" We’ll never really know HOW they "feel" it, but fear-related problems can often be treated with great success. However, if the triggers are not identified and you attempt the "oh, get over it treatment plan" the problem can be exacerbated. Dealing with fearful dogs can be complex especially when a dog is exhibiting phobic behaviors. Sometimes the fears may involve physiological causes or are so extreme that they may require the use of medication. This lecture will cover the possible causes of fear and how to deal with a fearful dog. Videos and case histories will be discussed.

Learning Theory 101 - Getting the Behavior You Want!

Operant conditioning involves the dog learning that his behavior has certain consequences, good, bad, pleasant and unpleasant. Dogs tend to repeat behaviors when they are reinforced and inhibit behaviors when the consequence is unpleasant. Understanding the basic principles of how dogs learn is critical if you are going to attempt to teach a new behavior or discourage an unwanted one. There are many ways to get a dog to do what you want. We’ll cover different concepts to help you achieve success!

1887 - silvani - classical conditioning: dealing with the emotional dog

Classical conditioning involves the dog learning that certain stimuli are paired up. In other words, when the dog sees "A", "B" happens. Classical conditioning tends to impact reflexive (i.e. salivation) and emotional (fear and aggression) behaviors. Anyone dealing with dogs on a daily basis will probably see changes in the dog’s behavior – good and bad. The dog may become extremely excited one moment and exhibit a fear response the next. Training the dog to do something with treats or stopping behaviors through punishment may not be answer. Typically, classical and operant conditioning occur in conjunction. However, if they are pitted against each other, classical will typically win out. We will look at ways to help you work with the "emotional" dog.

1889 - silvani - dealing with aggression in small dogs

Aggression is one of the most serious problems to deal with and one of the leading complaints of owners of small dogs. Causes can vary from lack of proper socialization, poor breeding, inconsistent training, over indulgence and much more. Aggression is a ‘normal’ canine behavior, but one that we should not be forced to deal with. If owners take a pro-active approach, many dogs can learn to control their emotions. However, once blood is drawn, the chances of successful rehabilitation lessen. We will take a look at a few common situations which cause dogs to exhibit aggression. Pia will give live demonstrations on how to deal with these situations to avoid a bite!

1888 - silvani - devil puppies: who are they?

Understanding dogs’ social behavior is a crucial part of dealing with puppies. We’ve seen a massive increase in dog-dog aggression as young as 8 weeks of age. Can puppy classes be contributing to this? Or, is it becoming more difficult to find a ‘good puppy?’ When you get puppies into your shelter or class that appear to be over the top, aggressive, a-social, what could have gone wrong and what do you do? If you’ve asked yourself these questions, this seminar is for you. Video clips will be shown and discussed.

1884 - silvani - playtime: the good the bad and the ugly - 4 hour set

In recent years, playtime has been considered a form of therapy, a popular way to exercise your dog, and an essential part of a healthy dog’s education and routine.

Daycare programs and dog parks are common, exposing dogs to a variety of playmates. Puppies are playing in class and dogs go on play dates, but is playtime all it is cracked up to be or are there hidden risks and dangers?

So what is play and how is it communicated? Dogs communicate by giving very clear signals of a desire to play, to continue to play, and to stop play. Most signals are done through visual cues, but we can’t ignore olfactory, tactile and auditory cues. Why do some dogs seem to play so well, while others appear to be frightened by an invitation to play or, sadly, have not had an opportunity to play and the interaction with another dog is quite frightening.

We will look into why dogs play and the benefits and risks from early puppyhood through adult. Are play and aggression closely related? Some dogs enjoy social play, while others enjoy object play. Where does dominance come into "play?" Or, does it? We’ll take a look at some popular theories and common myths as well as developing some rules for owners to follow when playing with their dogs or permitting their dogs to play with other canine friends.

Through videos, we will look at a variety of play situations and evaluate what play is healthy and when it is potentially harmful. We will go over the early warning signs from puppyhood as well as give you ideas on what to look for when evaluating shelter dogs or selecting playmates in your puppy classes or when attempting to find friends for your best friend.

1885 - silvani - who says little dogs don't need training

Do small dogs require the same training, handling and socialization as their fellow 60 pounders? Is it fair to put a 3 lb. Yorkie in the same class as a 90 lb. Labrador? Are people not taking their little tykes out into public in fear of disease, trauma, injury or even death? If so, what are the risks of keeping the little dog at home and how does this affect you, the professional? Or, do owners really think little dogs aren’t much of a nuisance and don’t require training? Many small dogs rarely leave the house, especially during the cold weather, and if they do they have are labeled "pocket pooches."

1892 - Salzberg - thinking outside the crate ( charging what you are worth)

Missi says, "Professional groomers are some of the most talented, compassionate, knowledgeable people I’ve ever met. I also am amazed at times by how low they set their own bar in business." "Having grown up in this business and watched people work so hard, with no health insurance, no retirement plan, and barely a vacation because they just can’t afford it has been heartbreaking.” What holds us back? Why are we afraid to raise our prices, even a few dollars? Why aren’t we charging for services that a vet is charging for? What is standing in our way of making the money we deserve? This is a program that will help us identify our limits and redefine our strengths and talents.

1897 - watson - grooming the new designer dogs
