1797 - Clicker Training Conference - 4 hours

Want to amaze your friends? Teach your dog to sneeze when you touch a Kleenex to his nose. If that sounds too stupid for your taste, how about having a dog that can find your child with the efficiency of a trained Search and Rescue dog? If you are having trouble connecting the common thread between these two behaviors, here’s the hint – they are both easy to teach if you understand clicker training.
Unimaginative people like to say that “there’s nothing new under the sun.” Sometimes that’s true and sometimes it’s not. For instance, an ancient Egyptian dog handler might marvel at the steel of a choke chain, yet would instantly know how to use one. Choke chains, muzzles and grooming harnesses are plainly ancient technology. That’s where clicker training leaves the pack. It’s a whole new way of creating behavior that can dramatically improve your control over your dog – or any dog.
All training tasks can be broken down into two basic components – information and motivation. An animal needs enough information to know what is expected and enough motivation to actually do the behavior. Clicker Training explains the process of coordinating these two critical components. This presentation will get you started in understanding the basics of this versatile, intelligent and effective method of training.

1798 - Safe Handling Techniques

The next time you have to groom or examine a dog, lift his or her flews and look above the gum line. In many cases, you'll see the Fiskar's logo right by those lovely, ivory colored teeth. Yes, those smooth, slightly-curved teeth are designed to dismember joints and tear through muscle, cartilage and tendons. In the final analysis, the idea is to make the critter hold still so you can perform nasty, tedious and painful things in an oh-so-loving manner – for fun and profit. Veterinary exams and grooming sessions separate fantasy from reality pretty darn quick. This presentation will examine ways to keep those pearly whites from contacting your thin, easily sliced skin and keeping your blood supply on the inside, where it belongs.

Wilkes

Gary Wilkes worked for eight years in animal shelters in every capacity: poop scooper, shelter manager, euthanasia tech, dog catcher, humane investigator, educator and board member of one of the largest shelters in the country.
He has worked for the last seventeen years offering behavior services by veterinary referral including the position of staff behaviorist for a veterinary neurological clinic. He has physically handled tens of thousands of animals over more than 25 years and "a goodly number of those animals were certified whackos," says Gary.
Gary is most known for developing the practical side of clicker training. Wilkes' methods and techniques are, above all, effective. This isn't the "bribe the doggie with a biscuit" or a "swing them around by the neck" sort of thing. Contrary to the whimsical rules of modern dog training, you don't need to be abusive or permissive to teach an animal that there are rules that need to be obeyed. This is a simple, effective way to predict and control behavior and any professional will benefit from learning these methods.
